Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila Reddy has called her father and former Chief Minister, the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, a ‘legendary leader’ who impacted the lives of crores of people during his short stint of five years as Chief Minister.
Speaking after paying tributes at YSR Ghat in Idupulapaya of Kadapa district on Wednesday (July 8, 2026), marking his 77th birth anniversary, she recalled Arogyasri, the 108 ambulance service, fee reimbursement and Jalayagnam as some of his pet schemes that had turned the lives of the poor for the better.
Calling him a champion of farmers, she said the farm loan waiver and free power for agriculture had bettered the lives of farmers, who, she said, were till then affected by monsoon vagaries, high input costs, lower margins and the lack of State intervention.
Ms. Sharmila later joined her family members, including her mother Y.S. Vijayamma, in celebrating her father’s birthday by cutting a cake.
“The Rajasekhara Reddy family expresses its gratitude to the crores of people who remember him today on this occasion,” she said in a statement.
