Four years ago, Sarin Kumar, a philatelist from Kozhikode, watched the nail-biting World Cup final between Argentina and France in Qatar, just like any devout Albiceleste fan.

While every football buff remembers how Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory in a thrilling penalty shootout, Mr. Kumar’s own journey with that match required a different kind of endurance. It took him three long years of waiting to secure the Argentine commemorative stamp released by its postal department.

”When I finally got it, I felt the same satisfaction that Argentina’s victory gave to millions of football fans. Sometimes the wait for a stamp becomes part of its story. The struggle makes finally owning it even more meaningful,” said Mr. Kumar.

Not just the Argentine stamp.”I have a collection of all World Cups right from 1930, “ he says.

For more than three decades, he has documented FIFA World Cup history through philately, building a collection of nearly 500 commemorative stamps covering every tournament. His albums also feature stamps honouring legendary footballers, host nations and memorable World Cup moments, turning the collection into a visual archive of the tournament’s evolution.

”Every stamp represents a moment in football history. Collecting them is like preserving the memories of every World Cup,” he said.

Building the collection has required patience and persistence. Many rare stamps have reached him only through fellow collectors abroad, while others have taken years because of limited circulation and postal challenges. The Argentina 2022 commemorative issue remained one of the hardest pieces to acquire, making it among the most treasured items in his collection.

Apart from football, the collection has introduced him to the history, culture and geography of countries around the world. Each stamp has encouraged him to learn about the nation that issued it, making philately as much an educational pursuit as a personal passion.

”Philately has never been just about collecting stamps. Every stamp has opened a window to a country’s history, culture and people. I have a separate collection dedicated to countries and their heritage as well,” he added.

Today, the FIFA World Cup stamps occupy a special place in his album. They remind him that years of committement bring the greatest victories. With the intense Round of 16 knockout stage underway, he is actively expanding his collection to capture every historic moment.
