The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has strongly opposed the State government’s proposal to allow beach shacks along the Visakhapatnam coast, alleging that such a move would lead to the deterioration of law and order.

YSRCP leaders led by its Visakhaatnam district president K.K. Raju and women leaders staged a protest at the Ramakrishna Beach against the government’s move to set up beach shacks. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Raju said that before coming to power, TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu had announced that he would create wealth by using the vast coastal line.

“Having failed to make use of the State’s coastline properly, the State government is now chanting the `bar and beer’ mantra,” he alleged. Mr Raju said that the government is sidelining traditional and conventional tourism and is promoting liquor trade in the name of tourism.

Mr. Raju said women and children visit the beaches to enjoy but with the setting up of beach shacks, they would not feel safe.

“The State government should set up fishing jetties and harbours instead of promoting liquor,” he said.

The YSRCP leaders also criticised Visakhapatnam MP M. Sribharat and TDP State president Palla Srinivasa Rao for talking in support of beach shacks.
