The Andhra Pradesh government is strengthening the secondary-level hospitals to provide advanced healthcare services closer to people’s homes, reducing the need for referrals to teaching hospitals.

The government is strengthening the district and area hospitals, Community Health Centres (CHCs) and mother and childcare hospitals to ensure that patients receive quality healthcare closer to their homes, said Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare Satya Kumar Yadav.

In a statement on Saturday, the Minister said these hospitals would be equipped with advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment and that the government has allocated ₹72.81 crore for the same in the past two years.

Advanced services including teleradiology facilities, CT scan machines, Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies (TIFFA) scans, Color Doppler ultrasound machines, laparoscopy equipment, neonatal care devices, and modern laboratory infrastructure have come up in secondary hospitals recently.

According to the statement, teleradiology services have been extended to the entire State, while 403 baby warmers and double-sided phototherapy units have been supplied to secondary hospitals. These help in maintaining newborn body temperature and treating neonatal jaundice. According to the statement, TIFFA scans have been installed in secondary government hospitals for the first time in the State.

Further, laboratories that offer advanced testing in haematology, biochemistry, hormone analysis, and histopathology are coming up in Araku, Seethampeta, Aganampudi, Tuni, Anaparthi, Jangareddygudem, Nandigama, Narasaraopet, Chirala, Gudur, Palamaneru, Guntakal, and Banaganapalle, the Minister said and adding that that the government has supplied 177 mortuary freezer chambers to secondary hospitals.

The Minister pointed out that the lab tests in these hospitals are being utilised effectively by the public, as is evident from the increase in tests. Between April 2024 and March 2025, hospitals conducted more than 3 crore diagnostic tests, while between April 2025 and March 2026, this number rose beyond 4-crore mark.
