Rain disrupts Mumbai commuter services; waterlogging reported

Mumbai faced disruptions in public transport and road traffic on July 1, 2026 as rain lashed the city and its suburbs. Train services on the Western, Central, and Harbour lines were affected owing to water on tracks. The Andheri subway recorded water accumulation up to five feet. Trees fell on roads in Kandivali, Borivali, Malad, Dahisar, and Goregaon, causing traffic jams. The rain began on the night of June 30 and continued through the morning.

The Central Railway and Western Railway officials issued statements regarding the rescheduling of some services. Passengers waited at stations for longer durations. The water level at the Andheri subway prompted the closure of that route for vehicular movement.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai and the Konkan region and an orange alert for other parts of the State, covering 29 districts, for the next eight days. The IMD reported that June saw a rainfall deficit in some districts. Ahilyanagar district received 66 mm rain in June against an expected 108 mm. The IMD had issued 23 yellow alerts during the month, but only scattered rain occurred.

The Monsoon session of the State Legislative Assembly is taking place in Mumbai. Opposition parties plan to raise issues related to law and order and farmers on July 1. The State government is likely to face questions on the rain situation and the rescue operations in flood-affected areas.

In Parbhani district, a 65-year-old woman farmer was swept away by flood waters near Adgaon Bazar in Jintur taluka. The incident occurred when she was returning from her work. Local residents conducted searches throughout the night. The Police confirmed that the search operation continued without locating the woman.

Rain in Pune and Sindhudurg districts allowed farmers to begin sowing activities that had been pending due to the dry weather in June. The farming community in these regions had been waiting for rain to start the planting season.

The administration asked residents in the low-lying areas to remain cautious. Local authorities deployed pumps to remove water from the Andheri subway. Traffic police managed vehicular movement at major intersections. The Fire Department received calls regarding fallen trees in multiple suburbs. The IMD forecasted rain for the coming days. Many office-goers faced delays in reaching their destinations.
