For the second time, Calcutta High Court on Monday (June 29, 2026) refused a plea for an urgent hearing of a petition filed by Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee seeking relaxation of an earlier order barring him to visit abroad for treatment.

Mr. Banerjee had sought an expedited hearing of his appeal seeking relaxation of the May 22 order to allow him to undergo specialised treatment overseas for his eye that was badly affected in a road accident in 2016.

However, the request for an urgent hearing of the petition was earlier also refused by the single bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharya on June 25, 2026.

According to the officials, Mr. Banerjee had sought permission for a seven-day visit outside of India for the treatment. However, the court maintained that this treatment can be done in the country and therefore observed that there is no need for an urgent hearing of the petition considering a pile of legal cases against the TMC leader currently sub-judice.

The petition stems from a criminal case lodged against the Diamond Harbour MP by an individual Rajib Sarkar over alleged derogatory remarks made against Union Home Hinister Amit Shah at an election rally.

He had moved the court for anticipatory bail in the case when the court, on May 22, directed him to co-operate with the investigating agency and not go abroad.
