AIMPLB planning to launch nation-wide campaign against Waqf Amendment Act

While on one hand the Telangana State Waqf Board (TGWB) is seeking the cooperation of mutawallis to upload documents connected to waqf properties on Umeed, a portal on which waqf documents are to be uploaded, a move that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board opposes, on the other, the Muslim panel is upping the ante against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, and will embark on what may be termed its second wave of demonstrations.

The AIMPLB will launch a nation-wide campaign with community engagements, inter-faith dialogue, demonstrations, and public meetings.

Mufti Omar Abedeen, one of the conveners of Save Waqf, Save Constitution, a committee working under the supervision of the AIMPLB., and organising events connected to protests against the new waqf legislation, explained that the move is rooted in a sense of community, and intended to protect waqf institutions and the rights accorded to Muslims and other minorities by the Constitution.

“Ahead of the interim orders, it was like the first phase of the protest against waqf. While we welcome certain aspects of the interim judgment, other aspects have deeply concerned the Muslim community, one of which is giving the State the right to develop a mechanism to determine whether someone has been practicing Islam for five years. This is disturbing. Practicing one’s own religion is a fundamental right,” he said.

“God forbid, if the final judgment is against the interests of the Muslim community, we will continue to protest. This includes a jail bharo movement as well,” he said.

The committee will engage with people from within the community, and from other communities to disseminate information about how the laws will affect waqf properties. This will be done by means of inter-faith dialogues. Round-table meetings with various socio-religious organisations and individuals, including academics and activists, will also be organised.

A demonstration at the Ramlila Maidan in the national capital is in the offing. Peaceful marches across States will also be organised.

Meanwhile, efforts will be made to engage mutawallis and urge them to get documentation of waqf institutions with which they are associated in order.

Earlier this week, TGSWB Chairman Syed Azmatullah Husseni convened a meeting with staff to prepare for a Umeed portal workshop. He too sought the cooperation of mutawallis in uploading documents on the portal.

“While the AIMPLB is opposing the Umeed portal, and we respect this, the board wants to ensure that no legal complications arise by not complying. Not uploading documents could lead to litigation and more problems,” a source said.
