The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) on Thursday conducted a raid on the Kumbla grama panchayat office following allegations of irregularities in granting permission for a multi-storey commercial building.

The inspection led by Vigilance DySP Unnikrishnan centred on alleged irregularities in the construction of Muliyadukkam Complex in Kumbla town, owned by one Adam Kunhi.

According to Vigilance officials, serious violations were detected in the construction of the four-storey structure, which was completed in phases since 2016. While permission was initially granted for only 653 sq ft, the building has now expanded to around 22,200 sq ft though panchayat records reportedly show just 2,000 sq ft.

The complex currently houses several shops and institutions, including Merchant Cooperative Society. It also has an auditorium capable of accommodating nearly 800 people. Allegations include hoarding of files and large-scale tax evasion. The construction history shows that the first floor came up in 2016, followed by the second in 2017 and two more floors in 2020. A roofing hall is now being added.

The raid followed a complaint filed by one Vikram Pai. DySP Unnikrishnan told the media that further details would emerge after completion of the inquiry.
