Operation Toofan: Law will apply equally to film personalities and VIPs in drug cases, says Ramesh Chennithala

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has asserted that there would be no immunity for influential drug offenders in Kerala.

Addressing the Legislative Assembly during the Question Hour on Tuesday (June 13, 2026), the Minister said the government would adopt strict action as part of the State’s anti-drug drive, Operation Toofan, against offenders regardless of their status.

Referring to the alleged prevalence of drug use at DJ parties, luxury hotels, and film-related gatherings, he said there will be strong action and that law would be applied equally to everyone, “including film personalities and other influential persons.”

He added that youth and student organisations will be roped into the state-wide drive as part of the major awareness campaign aimed at preventing substance abuse among young people

Public awareness against drag abuse

Addressing the Legislative Assembly during the Question Hour , the Minister said the government also plans to bring together voluntary groups, social and religious organisations to strengthen public awareness against drug abuse.

According to the Minister, Kerala Police registered 2,954 cases involving possession of various prohibited narcotic substances as part of Operation Toofan between June 2 and June 17. In addition, 1,421 cases were booked under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) relating to violations involving tobacco products.

As part of intensifying awareness and rehabilitation efforts. over 2,152 anti-drug awareness classes and 167 counselling sessions have been conducted across districts. Moreover, 12 persons who are struggling with substance abuse have been referred to de-addiction centres for treatment and rehabilitation.

Besides, the dedicated helpline numbers and WhatsApp facility launched for the public to confidentially share information related to drug trafficking and consumption have received over 1,600 phone calls and 1,116 WhatsApp messages.
