The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Mumbai. The forecast indicates thunderstorms, lightning, and rainfall over the next three hours. The onset of the southwest monsoon over the city is expected later on Monday or Tuesday (June 22 or 23, 2026).

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) shared the nowcast warning from the IMD on Monday. The warning said winds at 30-40 kmph and spells of rainfall are expected at some locations in Mumbai. The BMC has advised residents to take precautions during thunderstorms and rain.

In the morning, Bandra East and other parts of Mumbai saw pre-monsoon showers, lightning, and thunderstorms. These conditions led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions in some areas.

The IMD will declare the monsoon onset only after all parameters are met. The monsoon generally reaches Mumbai around June 10, but its arrival has been delayed this year. Experts have attributed the delay to El Nino effects. The monsoon advanced into south Konkan earlier this month but its progress stalled due to weather conditions.

The BMC released rainfall data for the period between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. The city recorded 17 mm of rainfall. The western suburbs recorded 10 mm, and the eastern suburbs recorded no rainfall. Savitribai Phule BMC School at Worli Naka recorded 61 mm of rainfall in an hour. G-South ward (Prabhadevi) recorded 58 mm. Adarsh Nagar School in Worli and Malabar Hill recorded 44 mm each. Worli Fire Station recorded 42 mm, and F-South ward (Parel) recorded 41 mm. In the western suburbs, Pali Chimbai School and Supari Tank BMC School, both in Bandra, recorded 70 mm of rainfall each. H-West ward office (Khar) received 30 mm. Bandra Fire Station received 28 mm, and Banana Leaf and Juhu Dispensary received 25 mm.

In its weather bulletin, the IMD said conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh around June 23. The Weather Department said rainfall is likely over northeast India till June 25 and over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till June 22. The IMD also warned of heat wave conditions over Vidarbha, East Madhya Pradesh, and East Uttar Pradesh for the next four to five days.
