Panic briefly gripped commuters at a busy Bengaluru Metro station on Friday morning after a passenger’s leg got trapped in the gap between a train and the platform while alighting, leading to a temporary disruption of services on the Purple Line.

The incident occurred between 10.20 a.m. and 10.30 a.m. at the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Railway Metro Station. According to officials, the passenger was alighting a crowded metro train when his leg slipped into the gap between the coach and the platform edge.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) officials described the incident as a rare occurrence, noting that such cases are uncommon. “Preliminary assessments suggest that heavy passenger movement and crowding during peak travel hours may have contributed to the mishap, “ a senior official told The Hindu.

According to officials, the Emergency Trip System (ETS) was immediately activated after the incident was reported. “The station controller, security personnel and other staff on duty swiftly responded, bringing the train to a halt and initiating rescue procedures. The passenger was safely rescued and administered first aid. He sustained only minor injuries and did not require major medical treatment,” the official added..

The incident resulted in a brief interruption of metro operations on the Purple Line. BMRCL officials said that at least three trips were affected, causing minor delays at several stations along the corridor before normal operations resumed.

Officials have urged commuters to exercise caution while boarding and alighting from trains. Officials pointed out that there is always a small gap between the train doors and the platform edge and reminded passengers to pay attention to the repeated onboard announcements that caution riders to “mind the gap.”

Speaking to The Hindu, Shruthi G., an eyewitness, said that the incident caused panic among passengers. “Everyone was shocked when it happened. The passenger was in severe pain and panic. Fellow commuters and metro staff immediately rushed to help. Fortunately, he was rescued safely after a few tense moments,” she said.
