BJP worker killed in Howrah; W.B. CM promises law to seize properties of accused

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was killed in West Bengal Howrah district on Wednesday (June 17, 2026) allegedly by Trinamool Congress deputy pradhan and his associates. Prasanta Dey was killed when a mob went to the house of Sk, Mafijul, a deputy pradhan of Santoshpur area of Bagnan in Howrah and raised questions on earlier incidents of corruption and electoral violence.

The BJP workers accompanying Prasanta Dey were attacked by deputy pradhan and his aides. After Prasanta Dey was murdered, his wife got a call asking her to remove the body.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that eight persons were arrested for the crime and the case has been handed over to the CID. He also promised compensation of ₹9 lakh and job to the wife of the deceased BJP worker.

Speaking to media persons, Chief Minister said that his government will bring a law in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly to auction the properties of accused in such cases.

“There is no need for people to form groups and go to the homes of accused persons. If required, the police will take the help of the CID and inter-state agencies. The STF has modern investigative tools and will act wherever evidence exists,” Mr. Adhikari said.

The West Bengal Chief Minister urged people to keep faith police and the administration to take stringent action in accordance with the law.

“I appeal to people not to go to anyone’s residence or cause unrest. The administration is taking all necessary and strict measures against corruption. The change in government was brought about to establish the rule of law. People should have faith in the legal process,” he said.

The Chief Minister also referred to the June 16 violence in Falta, where a mob attacked a police station to free Trinamool leader Jahangir Khan. He said that three cases have been registered and 25 people arrested so far.

Tension had erupted in Falta on Tuesday after a group of people led by Jahangir Khan’s wife, protested outside the local police station, demanding Mr. Khan’s release. Mr. Khan, who had stepped away from Falta repoll elections days before repolling on May 21, was arrested on June 8 at Panitanki in Darjeeling district, bordering Nepal.
