A two-year-old boy was run over by a school van at Pudukudiyanur village near Sholinghur town in Ranipet on Wednesday.

The police said the deceased was identified as K. Hemnath, son of S. Kathirvel, 35, and K. Monisha, 31. The couple also has a daughter K. Porkodi, 5.

The police said, on the day of the incident, Monisha left her son Hemnath alone to bring Monisha who had alighted from her school van. Meanwhile, Hemnath had crawled on to the road. Unaware that Hemnath was on the carriageway, school van driver V. Prakash, 28, ran over the boy.

Passersby and other motorists rushed to the spot and nabbed the van driver. On being informed, Sholinghur Town police inspected the spot. The body was sent to Government Taluk Hospital in Sholinghur for postmortem. A case was registered. A probe is under way.
