MDMK general secretary Vaiko, on Wednesday, called on Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat in Chennai and presented him with a detailed memorandum urging the government not to grant permission for a private copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi district.

Speaking to journalists, Mr. Vaiko said “I have presented a detailed memorandum to the Chief Minister seeking the rejection of any proposal, permission, licence, or approval sought by Vedanta Limited / Sterlite Copper for establishing or reviving a copper smelting plant anywhere in Tamil Nadu, particularly in Thoothukudi district.”

He also said that he had invited Mr. Vijay to attend the release of a six-volume book on his 30 years in Parliament in New Delhi on August 4. To a question on whether the MDMK would join the TVK alliance, Mr. Vaiko said only the party’s general council would take a decision.
