Mamata files plea in Calcutta HC challenging poll result in Bhabanipur Assembly seat she lost

Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (June 16, 2026) filed an election petition before the Calcutta High Court, challenging the poll result in the Bhabanipur Assembly seat she lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

Mr. Adhikari, now the first BJP CM of Bengal, defeated Ms. Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes in the seat.

Ms. Banerjee had filed a similar petition in 2021 when she lost to Mr. Adhikari from Nandigram by a margin of 1,956 votes

Counting of votes of the West Bengal Assembly election was held on May 4.

CM Adhikari, who won both Bhabanipur and Nadigram seats this year, resigned from the Nandigram Assembly seat,

He had won Nandigram by defeating Trinamool Congress candidate Pabitra Kar by 9,665 votes.
