61-day fishing ban to end in Rameswaram

The quiet shores of Rameswaram will burst into life on Sunday (June 14, 2026) evening as hundreds of local fishermen venture back into the sea. The resumption of activity follows the official conclusion of the mandatory 61-day annual fishing ban, which had kept mechanised boats anchored at the docks for more than two months.

The annual fishing ban, enforced by maritime authorities, is intended to protect marine ecosystems and allow fish populations to breed undisturbed.

According to Fisheries Department officials, traditional country boats and small trawlers were the only vessels permitted to operate during this period and were restricted to a zone within two nautical miles of the shoreline to prevent commercial overfishing.

While the mandatory downtime halted regular income, local fishers utilised the two-month break to undertake extensive overhauls and structural repairs on their mechanised vessels, ensuring that they are seaworthy for the upcoming season. However, besides the joy of returning to the sea, long-standing geopolitical grievances continue to simmer within the fishing community.

Fishermen arrests

P. Jesu Raja, leader of the Mechanised Boat Fishermen Welfare Association, highlighted the persistent challenges plaguing local livelihoods. He urged the Union government to expedite the release of over 25 Indian fishermen currently detained in Sri Lankan prisons.

Furthermore, the association renewed its longstanding demand for the retrieval of Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka, a move it argues is essential to ensure conflict-free fishing. The community also sought an enhanced rehabilitation package, calling for increased compensation for boats seized or missing since 2025, he added.

Decision on tokens

A Fisheries Department official said that Ramanathapuram district, comprising areas such as Rameswaram, Mandapam, and Pamban, among others, has nearly 1,400 mechanised boats. Though the fishing ban period will end at midnight on Sunday, a decision on issuing tokens is yet to be taken due to the weather forecast of strong winds in place till June 15. Based on the weather conditions, boats will be permitted to enter the sea, the official said.
