Goods worth lakhs were destroyed when a major fire broke out at the paint and eye-drop manufacturing units on Noombal Main Road near Vanagaram in the early hours of Saturday.

The facilities were closed around 6.30 p.m. on Friday. On being alerted about the fire by residents at 5 a.m. the next day, police personnel from the Maduravoyal, Poonamallee, and Virugambakkam fire and rescue stations rushed to the spot with firefighting equipment.

Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before bringing it under control. According to officials, the fire broke out at the two adjoining industrial units in Noombal near Vanagaram.

Short circuit

Preliminary investigations suggest that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the blaze. However, investigation is under way to ascertain the exact cause of the fire.

The Vanagaram police have registered a case.
