Reservoir inflows rise, first flood warning issued at Prakasam Barrage

Major reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh are witnessing steady inflows following widespread rainfall, ensuring comfortable storage levels for irrigation, power generation, and drinking water needs across the state.

The Srisailam reservoir recorded a water level of 840.55 ft with 201.87 TMC in storage. Inflows stood at 23,464 cusecs, while outflows were reported at 19,018 cusecs. Further downstream, the Nagarjuna Sagar project maintained a water level of 302.81 ft, storing 200.38 TMC against a gross capacity of 473.14 TMC, with inflows of 23,464 cusecs and outflows of 19,018 cusecs. The Pulichintala project reported a level of 175.00 ft with 41.77 TMC in storage and heavy inflows of 1,30,794 cusecs.

With continuing releases from upstream projects, the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada is witnessing surplus discharges. As of Wednesday (September 24, 2025) morning, the released inflow at the barrage was reported at 4,35,255 cusecs, prompting authorities to continue the first flood warning.

Of the total inflow, 4,22,004 cusecs were released as surplus into the Krishna River. Canal off-takes included 8,242 cusecs into the Krishna Eastern Main Canal and 5,009 cusecs into the Krishna Western Main Canal, while the Guntur Channel received no discharge. In all, canal draws accounted for 13,251 cusecs.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Organization (APSDMA) has cautioned that inflows may rise further, potentially touching 4.50 lakh cusecs. To ensure public safety, five SDRF teams have been deployed at the ghats in Vijayawada to carry out emergency rescue and relief operations if required.

With Dasara festivities underway, authorities have issued special instructions to regulate pilgrim movement at the river ghats. Police, irrigation, and municipal staff have been stationed along vulnerable stretches, while barricades and warning boards are being set up to alert the public.

“Strict precautions are being taken, and all departments are on alert. Public cooperation is essential at this stage,” said Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the Disaster Management Organization.
