The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Joint Director of the Local Self-Government department to conduct a site inspection of the defunct Shanthitheeram Public Crematorium at Edayar in Kadungalloor in the presence of a department engineer. Commission Chairperson Alexander Thomas issued the directive in a case registered suo motu by the panel based on a media report.

The Commission instructed that notices be served to the Kadungalloor grama panchayat secretary and the ward member concerned before the inspection. It also directed that the feasibility of making the crematorium operational again through repair and maintenance works be assessed.

The Joint Director has been directed to submit a report to the Commission within one month. The panchayat secretary has also been asked to file a separate report.

The Commission further directed that a senior officer representing the Joint Director and the secretary of the Kadungalloor grama panchayat appear in person at a sitting scheduled for 10 a.m. on July 14 at the PWD Rest House, Pathadipalam.
