A fire broke out at a dumpyard located off the Velachery-Tambaram High Road in Madipakkam on Thursday (June 4, 2026), gutting heaps of garbage and several damaged and unclaimed vehicles stored on the premises.

Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the site, triggering panic among motorists and commuters during morning peak traffic hours.

On receiving information, personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services stations in Velachery and Guindy rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. The blaze was brought under control after nearly an hour of effort.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Traffic movement on the arterial road was affected due to the smoke and the emergency response operations.
