Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday reached Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections, with his party, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), likely to field candidates in more than 20 constituencies.
Mr. Owaisi, who heads the AIMIM as president, has for several years sought to expand the party’s presence in the Bihar Vidhan Sabha. His primary focus has been highlighting the backwardness of the Seemanchal region, which he has previously attributed to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Janata Dal (United) governments.
Seemanchal campaign
The AIMIM campaign, scheduled to begin on Wednesday (September 24), will centre on the Seemanchal districts of Purnea, Katihar, Araria and Kishanganj. Titled the Seemanchal Nyay Yatra, it will include roadshows and public meetings in constituencies where the party has contested earlier.
On the first day, the campaign will cover Kishanganj, Thakurganj and Bahadurganj. On the second, it will move through Kochadaman, Jokihat, Araria and Purnea. More rallies are planned in other parts of the State.
Talks with INDIA bloc
In the run-up to the polls, AIMIM’s Bihar leadership, led by Amour legislator Akhtarul Iman, had sought to join the INDIA bloc. The party had not asked for ministerial positions but demanded a special package for Seemanchal, the space to contest six seats, and proportional representation for Dalits, backward classes and minorities. The proposal did not receive a response.
Past record
In the 2020 Bihar elections, AIMIM fielded 19 candidates and won five seats – Amour, Kochadaman, Baisi, Jokihat and Bahadurganj.
After landing in Bihar on Tuesday, Mr. Owaisi said that the party cadre had been preparing for several weeks.
“The campaign has already begun under the leadership of Akhtarul Iman. We came in April and stated that we would contest the elections. The four-day programme in Seemanchal will entail visiting different Assembly constituencies. We will meet people there and organise public meetings,” he told reporters.
