For every ₹100 spent on healthcare in Telangana in 2022-23, households paid nearly ₹39 from their own pockets, almost matching the government’s contribution of ₹41, according to the latest National Health Accounts (NHA) Estimates for India. As per the report, families spent ₹10,249 crore on healthcare during the year, only slightly less than the ₹10,692 crore spent by the government.

The NHA report tracks the flow of funds through India’s health system and measures expenditure by governments, households and other financing sources.

The National Health Accounts Estimates for India 2022-23, released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, shows that out-of-pocket expenditure (OOPE) accounted for 39.4% of Telangana’s total health expenditure during the year, while government health expenditure contributed 41.1%.

The findings suggest that while the government remained the largest contributor to healthcare spending in Telangana, households continued to bear a substantial share of medical costs through direct payments at the point of care.

Overall, Telangana’s total health expenditure was estimated at ₹26,040 crore in 2022-23. This translated into a per capita health expenditure of ₹6,853 and was equivalent to 2% of the State’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).

Compared with the national average, Telangana recorded a lower dependence on out-of-pocket expenditure. Across India, households accounted for 43.4% of total health expenditure during 2022-23, compared with 39.4% in Telangana.

The share of government spending in Telangana’s total health expenditure was slightly lower than the national average. Government health expenditure accounted for 43.7% of total health expenditure across India, compared with 41.1% in Telangana.

The report also provides a comparison with other southern States. In Andhra Pradesh, total health expenditure was estimated at ₹36,596 crore, with households accounting for 59.6% of spending and the government contributing 35.1%.

In Tamil Nadu, total health expenditure was estimated at ₹48,671 crore. Government health expenditure accounted for 44.2% of the total, while out-of-pocket expenditure constituted 38.7%.
