The upcoming Kazipet Rail Manufacturing Unit of Indian Railways is nearing completion and is expected to produce around 200 intercity trains over the next five years, said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday.

Speaking to the media after reviewing the operational plans for the Kazipet facility in New Delhi, along with Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu and senior officials, Vaishnaw said the new trains will be deployed across the country for short-distance travel. The proposed intercity trains will be designed for frequent stops and will typically cover distances of about 300 km. They are intended to function like shuttle services, catering to the commuting needs of students, employees, and small business owners, while remaining affordable.

Highlighting the features, the minister said the trains will be equipped with modern amenities such as automatic door-closing systems, improved ventilation, and enhanced safety-focused coach designs. Each train will have a 20-coach configuration, with two toilets in every coach—one at each end.

The trains will also include advanced jerk-free couplers and modern bogies to ensure passenger comfort. Designed to run at speeds of up to 130 kmph, they will be equipped with regenerative braking systems, which convert braking energy into electricity and feed it back into the grid.

Mr. Vaishnaw noted that this technology will make the trains more environmentally friendly, with significantly lower carbon emissions compared to road transport, said a press release.
