A 68-year-old fruit vendor was found murdered inside the government egg procurement godown near the office of Deputy Superintendent of Police in Tirupattur town on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as L. Santhammal, 68, a resident of Tirupattur. Initial inquiry revealed Santhammal was a fruit vendor for more than two decades. After the death of her husband K. Lakshmanan, Santhammal moved her fruit shop near All Women Police Station (AWPS) in town.

Santhammal used to keep her unsold fruits in the godown before she used to visit her daughters house in Konambedu village near the town every day. However, on Tuesday, she waited in the godown before making the visit due to heavy rain in the area.

On Wednesday, a few residents noticed Santhammal in a pool of blood. They alerted Tirupattur Taluk police. Superintendent of Police (SP) Akshay Anil Wakhare inspected the spot. Fingerprint experts and sniffer dogs were roped in to collect evidence as part of investigations. A case was registered. Special teams were formed to nab the suspects. A probe is under way.
