Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) officials sprang into action after a brief spell of rain and strong winds caused chaos in the city on Sunday evening (May 24, 2026).

While the day began with high temperatures, the weather changed by evening. According to the Directorate of Economics and Statistics, the city recorded only 6.5 mm of rain, but the wind speed reached 32 km/h, which is considered moderate.

The strong winds uprooted small trees, hoardings, and banners, which were later cleared by the municipal staff. The corporation deployed private earth movers in addition to its own vehicles to ensure a quick clearance of the roads. Power disruptions were also reported in many areas of the city as strong winds continued for nearly 30 minutes.

Officials from the engineering and sanitation departments of the VMC conducted field inspections and initiated prompt action to prevent waterlogging, and special attention was given to main roads, low-lying areas, and busy traffic junctions, where machines were used to remove stagnant water.

VMC Commissioner Dhyana Chandra H.M. monitored the situation and instructed officials to remain alert and to respond immediately to complaints.
