Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Udhayanidhi Stalin on Saturday (May 23, 2026) said that 30 major incidents of crime within 12 days of the new government assuming office had cast serious doubts on the State’s law and order situation.

“Within just 12 days of the new government assuming office, more than 30 major incidents — including sexual violence, ganja smuggling, rowdyism, unruly behaviour and excesses by ruling party members, and now the abduction and murder of a girl in [near] Coimbatore — have made headlines, casting serious doubts on the State’s law and order,” he said in a social media post.

He said those responsible for the abduction and murder of the minor girl should be swiftly brought to justice and punished, as the incident had sent shockwaves across the country.

“I urge the Chief Minister [C. Joseph Vijay] to accord top priority to maintaining law and order to ensure that no such incident takes place again,” he said.

PMK, DMDK condemn murder

PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss and DMDK general secretary Premallatha Vijayakant also condemned the abduction and murder of the 10-year-old girl, and urged the Tamil Nadu government to take stringent action against those responsible.

In a statement, Dr. Anbumani said reports that the girl from Pallapalayam near Sulur had allegedly been “abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered by persons from the same locality were shocking”. Expressing condolences to the grieving family, he urged the State government to ensure that those responsible are brought before the law and awarded the death penalty.

He also alleged that more than 62,000 crimes against women and children, including 27,000 offences registered under the POCSO Act, had taken place during the previous DMK regime. Stating that the present Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Mr. Vijay had initiated measures such as the ‘Singapen Special Force’ to prevent crimes against women and children, he called for additional focus on their safety.

In a separate statement, Ms. Premallatha termed the incident “shocking and painful”, and demanded immediate and strict action against those involved in the “cruel and inhuman act”. She also conveyed condolences to the child’s family on behalf of the DMDK and urged the government to maintain strict law and order to prevent such incidents from recurring.
