West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday (May 18, 2026) met senior officers of Kolkata Police’s South East Division to review the law-and-order situation, a day after violence broke out at Park Circus seven-point crossing in Kolkata, officials said.

No stone pelting along with religious sloganeering will be allowed, said West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari after meeting police officials injured in Park Circus violence on Sunday (May 17, 2026). Mr. Adhikari urged the Home Ministry to keep the remaining CAPF battalions in the State till the West Bengal Government can augment its police strength.

“40 people have been arrested so far in connection with Park Circus violence. Will not tolerate attacks on police personnel,” Mr. Adhikari said. “Strict action will be taken against those who violate law,” he added.

Several police personnel were injured after protesters allegedly hurled stones and bricks at security forces at the minority-dominated area on Sunday (May 17, 2026).

Trouble erupted during a protest over an alleged anti-encroachment drive in Tiljala area, police said, adding that several persons were detained in connection with the incident.

A large police contingent remained deployed in and around Park Circus on Monday (May 18, 2026) to prevent any further flare-up, officials added.
