The Kerala State Human Rights Commission on Friday called for strict action against police officers who make the accused wear only undergarments in the station lockups.

The direction was issued by Commission chairperson Alexander Thomas.

The panel directed the State Police Chief to ensure that the instructions given by the police headquarters in this regard are followed by the officers.

The action was taken on a complaint filed by a Thiruvananthapuram-native R.G. Leninraj alleging that making the accused wear only undergarments in the lockups was a violation of their human and fundamental rights.

The commission also received a report from the ADGP (Law and Order) in the matter.

According to the report, the police headquarters had given instructions that the police personnel should not violate the human and fundamental rights of the accused and warned of strict disciplinary action for any act contrary to this.
