Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Tuesday and sought the cancellation of membership of the seven Rajya Sabha MPs who defected from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and merged with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month.
His visit came after Raghav Chadha, one of the seven MPs who defected, met Ms. Murmu and submitted a representation alleging that the ruling party in Punjab is resorting to “vendetta politics” following their exit from AAP.
On April 24, AAP suffered a setback when seven of its 10 Rajya Sabha members – Mr. Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal – quit the party. While Ms. Maliwal is an MP from Delhi, the remaining six are lawmakers from Punjab.
