The Congress, part of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra, announced on Thursday (April 30, 2026) that they will not field a candidate for the Legislative Council elections in the State. on May 12, 2026 The decision was taken after MVA leaders held a meeting at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence.

On Wednesday (April 29, 2026), the Shiv Sena (UBT) unilaterally announced its leader Ambadas Danve as its candidate for the election. Mr. Danve had already filed his nominations for the elections. Reacting to this, the Congress too announced that it would field its own candidate for the polls, opening up the possibility of alliance partners contesting for a single seat in the Council.
