A paleontological assessment of fossil assemblage at Panaiyur in Thoothukudi district reveals that it belongs to the middle to late Holocene period, approximately 8,000 to 12,000 years ago.

The technical report of the assessment by the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) was authored by its scientific team comprising Dola Roy, Debashree Dam, R. Chandran, C. Raghunathan, and Dhriti Banerjee.
