The VIT-AP School of Law (VSL) at VIT-AP University, Amaravati, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), organised a two-day international workshop on “Refugee Protection: Contemporary Themes” on September 18 and 19. The workshop brought together experts from academia, civil society, and international organisations to discuss evolving international frameworks for refugee protection, mixed migration movements, and national responses to displacement.

The event was particularly significant as 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of the UNHCR Statute, adopted by the UN General Assembly on 14 December 1950. The Statute remains the cornerstone of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees’ mandate, outlining the rationale for its creation and the legal basis for its functions.

In her inaugural address, Areti Sianni, Chief of Mission, UNHCR India and Maldives, reflected on UNHCR’s global and regional mandate. Sunod Jacob, Government Liaison Officer, UNHCR India and Maldives, spoke on the intersection of international commitments and state responses, while Anshdeep Kaur, External Relations Associate, highlighted the importance of partnerships and advocacy.

The two-day workshop also saw participation from S.V. Kota Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of VIT-AP University; V.S.L. Benarji Chakka, Dean of VSL; faculty members, scholars, and students.
