Veteran Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, on Wednesday (April 15, 2026), alleged that the proposed increase in Lok Sabha seats followed by delimitation would reduce the proportional representation of southern States and weaken their voice in Parliament.
Addressing reporters in Coimbatore, he said the plan to increase the total number of seats by 50% before carrying out delimitation was “an illusion” that would mask an actual decline in representation for States such as Tamil Nadu. He said a direct delimitation exercise would have reduced Tamil Nadu’s seats from 39 to 32, which would have been evident to the public.
