A 35-year-old farmer was arrested by the Forest Department for possessing one tonne of red sanders logs, worth around ₹50 lakh, in his farm land at Rajapalayam near here on Thursday.

Officials identified him as B. Sekar. Based on a tip-off that red sanders logs were stored in a farmland in the village, a special forest team conducted searches and found29 logs of red sanders stored in the pump roomin the farm land.

Sekar and his accomplices tried to escape from the spot, but the officials managed to nab him. Officials said that Sekar brought the logs from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. He stored them in his farmland before they were to be transported to furniture merchants in Bengaluru.
