High turnout in Assembly polls historic testimony for India’s democracy: CEC

With Assam, Puducherry and Kerala witnessing record voter turnouts, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar said the Assembly polls in the two States and one Union Territory are a “historic” testimony not only for India but for the entire democratic world.

There was record poll participation in the Assembly elections on Thursday (April 9, 2026), with the highest-ever voter turnout of 85.9% in Assam and 89.87% in Puducherry, crossing the previous highs of 84.67% for the State in 2016, and 86.19% for the Union Territory in 2011. Kerala too recorded one its highest polling percentages at 78.27 %.
