With an electorate exceeding 21.6 lakh, the Kannur district administration has set an ambitious target of achieving 85% voter turnout in the upcoming Assembly election, backed by an extensive and innovative voter awareness campaign.

The district, which recorded 77.78% turnout in the 2021 Assembly polls and 77.28% in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, continues to outperform the State average. However, officials note that nearly 25% of eligible voters remain outside the electoral process, prompting a renewed push to enhance participation.

Branded ‘Inkit Kannur: Your Vote, Your Tomorrow’, the campaign is being spearheaded under the leadership of District Collector and District Election Officer Arun K. Vijayan, with the programme design led by Assistant Collector and SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) nodal officer Ehteda Mufassir.

Mr. Vijayan said that the 85% target was not merely numerical but reflected a commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter was informed and empowered to participate. With a strong foundation and wide-ranging outreach, Kannur is aiming to set a new benchmark in electoral participation.

Spanning all 11 Assembly constituencies, the initiative has transformed public spaces, including beaches, sports, forts, markets, and campuses, into hubs of civic engagement. Activities such as flash mobs, quiz competitions, pledge drives, and awareness sessions are being organised to promote voter participation.

Ms. Mufassir said special emphasis had been placed on reaching marginalised and underrepresented groups. Targeted programmes have been rolled out for tribal communities in Aralam, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, first-time voters, and coastal populations, addressing barriers related to access, mobility, and awareness.

She said a series of creative public events formed the backbone of the campaign. ’Electropitch’ encourages citizens to deliver one-minute speeches on the importance of voting, while ‘Democracy across Generations’ connects youth with elderly voters to highlight democratic continuity. The ‘Espresso Your Voice’ initiative conducted with local cafes reinforces participation through relatable messaging.

Ms. Mufassir said cultural integration had been the hallmark of the campaign. Events such as a democracy-themed fashion show at the Muzhappilangad drive-in beach, sand art display at the Payyambalam beach, and art installations at the Kannur Fort have combined local identity with civic messaging. Traditional performances, including Kalaripayattu, have also been used to widen outreach.

Extending beyond conventional methods, the campaign has introduced initiatives such as ‘Fly Your Vote’, featuring kite flying events and boat rallies across coastal and backwater regions to spread awareness, she said, adding that the drive followed a convergence model, mobilising networks such as Kudumbashree, Haritha Karma Sena, NSS volunteers, CSR partners, and educational institutions to ensure last-mile connectivity across urban and rural areas.

In the final phase, at least one model polling station is being set up in each constituency with improved accessibility and voter-friendly features, aimed at enhancing the overall voting experience.
