Rajamahendravaram is set to grab attention of the water sports enthusiasts with river Godavari being at the heart of an international event as Andhra Pradesh government is gearing up to host the International Dragon Boat League (IDBL) 2026, which will begin from May 30.

The three-day water sport extravaganza will be primarily conducted by the State government in collaboration with sports organising firm, ‘Think Outside’ and Indian Kayaking & Canoeing Association (IKCA).

At least 25 countries have been invited to take part in the event with nearly 1,000 athletes will be in the fray to clinch the top spots in three categories – Dragon boat race, Kayaking and Canoeing.

A Khelo India initiative

Rajamahendravaram MLA Adireddy Srinivas has been upbeat about the event. “At least 25 countries have been invited for the IDBL to be held in the city, exploring the potential for water sports in the Godavari river. The IDBL will be hosted under the Khelo India initiative,”Mr. Srinivas said.

“The international sports event is being designed to celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Rajamahendravaram and its association with the river Godavari with the slogan, ‘IDBL-2026; Where Tradition Meets Sport,” Mr. Srinivas said.

‘Global hub for water sports’

IKCA Planning and Development Director R. Pradeep Naidu confirmed that 12 countries will take part in the upcoming event. “The IDBL will be organised in three categories; Men, Women and Mixed. The three-day event will begin on May 30. As many as 12 countries have already confirmed their participation,” he told The Hindu, adding that the the event strives to explore the potential of Rajamahendravaram to be the global hub for water sports.
