IAS officer in U.P. quits service over ‘denial’ of meaningful posting

Rinku Singh Rahi, a 2022-batch IAS officer, resigned on Tuesday alleging that he had not been given any meaningful posting for a prolonged period. The officer claimed he was kept in an “attached” position and although he continued receiving salary, he was denied the opportunity to serve the public.

In July 2025, the officer was transferred and attached to the U.P. Revenue Board after a video purportedly showing him doing sit-ups amid a protest by lawyers in Shahjahanpur went viral on social media. Before cracking the UPSC exam, Mr. Rahi was a Provincial Civil Service officer posted at the Welfare Department in Muzaffarnagar where he was nearly killed after being shot at multiple times by assailants when he busted a major scam in his department.

On July 28, 2025, he was appointed as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Puwayan, Shahjahanpur, and removed from his post just 36 hours after assuming charge.

“A Dalit IAS officer was forced to quit due to neglect. It raises question mark on the system,” Lok Sabha MP from Nagina Chandra Shekhar Aazad said.

In a post on X, Mr. Aazad said, “Rinku Singh Rahi, a Dalit, resigns not as a personal decision by an officer but as a serious question mark on the entire administrative system. He exposed corruption in 2009, endured seven bullet wounds in a deadly attack, and yet remained committed to public service within the system. Today, he is forced to say he is being denied work and that this neglect has led him to resign.”
