The CPI(M)’s State unit on Monday announced its candidates for five Assembly constituencies. The party has retained M. Chinnadurai, the sitting MLA from the Gandarvakottai constituency, but replaced Nagai Mali with D. Latha in Kizhvelur, as he had completed two terms in the Assembly.

The candidate for the Padmanabhapuram constituency is R. Chellasamy, the party’s district secretary in Kanniyakumari district. In Palani, the party has fielded N. Pandi, a member of its State secretariat and secretary of the farmers’ union in Dindigul district.

In Tiruvottiyur, L. Sundararajan, a member of its State committee, has been fielded. Mr Sundararajan, who began his career as a contract worker, is active in the party’s trade union, CITU.

D. Latha is the Nagapattinam district secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA).

The party is contesting the elections as a constituent of the DMK-led alliance.
