Former CPI(M) leader and rebel candidate V. Kunhikrishnan has alleged that he is unable to find space to open an election office in the Payyannur Assembly constituency, claiming that landowners are backing out due to fear of repercussions from CPI(M) workers.
Mr. Kunhikrishnan said he was recently forced to dismantle an election office after the property owner was allegedly threatened. He added that another supporter who had agreed to provide space on Sunday (March 22, 2026) later withdrew, citing pressure and concerns within the family over possible repercussions.
Contesting from a CPI(M) stronghold after quitting the party, Mr. Kunhikrishnan has been a vocal critic of the leadership. He had earlier accused sitting MLA T.I. Madhusoodanan of misappropriating the martyrs’ fund and other funds collected in the name of party activities.
The United Democratic Front has decided not to field a candidate in Payyannur, extending support to Mr. Kunhikrishnan in the Assembly election. Senior Congress leader K. Sudhakaran is among those who have publicly backed his candidature and have also spoken to him over the phone, extending their full support.
Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Kunhikrishnan alleged that a climate of fear prevailed in the constituency. “People are hesitant to come forward openly despite widespread support for me. This reflects the level of intimidation faced by those opposing the CPI(M),” he said.
He claimed that such developments would ultimately turn against the Left Democratic Front and translate into votes in his favour. “There is strong support for me even in areas considered party bastions,” he said.
The rebel candidate further alleged that a “mafia group” was controlling the election activities of the CPI(M)-led LDF in the constituency and that the party leadership had failed to act on the corruption allegations he had raised. Describing the situation as a threat to democratic functioning, he said elections should allow people to freely express their will.
“There is an attempt to push the State in an undemocratic direction. Voters will respond through the ballot,” he added, expressing confidence in victory.
