Uncleared waste dumped in vacant sites and street corners in a majority of wards under the City Municipal Council limits in Yadgir threatens to pose health hazards to citizens particularly in the wake of unseasonal rain.

Yadgir CMC has 31 wards. The CMC Commissioner and other officers are working with the same number of garbage collectors as they had earlier.

Although the CMC civic staff collect garbage through garbage collection vehicles, including auto tippers or vehicles from households and other places, often residents, commercial establishments and vendors tend to dump garbage in vacant sites or street corners posing health hazards to citizens.

In several prime locations in the city like Laxmi Nagar and Basaveshwar Nagar, a place behind the old District Court, near the Taluk Panchayat office and other areas, one can see indiscriminate dumping of solid waste.

While in a few localities citizens play an active role in keeping their surroundings clean, there are several areas where instead of handing over waste to the civic staff, it is dumped in vacant sites and street corners by residents themselves.

“We as citizens are also to be blamed as we fail to do our duty. Despite knowing about the health hazards caused by indiscriminate dumping of waste, residents continue to do so. Hence, the CMC should impose fine against such people to teach them a lesson,” said a resident of Basaveshwar Nagar, on the condition of anonymity.

When contacted, Commissioner of CMC Umesh Chavan told The Hindu that he will ask the department concerned to take immediate action along with sensitising residents to the civic issue.

Deputy Commissioner of Yadgir Harshal Bhoyar, who has been appointed as administrator of Yadgir CMC following the completion of the tenure of the elected body, emphasised the need for citizens joining hands with the municipal staff.

“We will organise awareness programmes to sensitise the public and involve them in making Yadgir a clean and beautiful city,” Mr. Bhoyar said.
