With actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) gearing up to go it alone in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, party sources indicate the senior leadership team including Mr Vijay are expected to contest from constituencies in Chennai. Mr Vijay was highly likely to make his electoral debut from the Perambur constituency, sources in the party said.

Multiple sources in the party told The Hindu Mr. Vijay is zeroing in on Perambur and they dismissed speculative reports that he might simultaneously contest from Tiruchi East.

The decision to lock in Perambur, which has more than 2.22 lakh electors after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll — the highest in Chennai district — appears to stem from an internal party survey that projected a favourable outcome for the party.

According to sources, TVK general secretary ‘Bussy’ N. Anand, who hails from Puducherry, is expected to enter the fray from T. Nagar in Chennai. The party general secretary (election campaign management) Aadhav Arjuna may be fielded from Villivakkam. Former AIADMK MLA J.C.D. Prabhakar, who joined TVK, is slated to contest from Thousand Lights, while party treasurer P. Venkataraman will most likely try his luck from Mylapore. Former MLA V.S. Babu is expected to contest from Kolathur, which is currently represented by DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

Deputy general secretaries of the party M. Arul Prakasam and A. Rajmohan are expected to be fielded from Saidapet and Egmore (Reserved), respectively. N. Marie Wilson, who is associated with a leading self-financing educational institution in Chennai, is likely to contest from R.K. Nagar, sources said.

It appears the TVK by tentatively seeking to field its second-rung leaders and known faces in Chennai, is attempting to consolidate its core support base of youngsters and women in the urban constituencies.

In the last Assembly election, the DMK and its allies won all 16 Assembly segments in Chennai district. Barring Madurantakam, the DMK alliance also dominated the broader Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur zone.

Beyond the state capital, the party’s chief coordinator of the high-level committee and nine-time MLA K.A. Sengottaiyan is expected to contest from Gobichettipalayam, his home turf. TVK’s general secretary (policy and propaganda) and former IRS officer R. Arunraaj and joint general secretary C.T.R. Nirmalkumar are likely to contest from Tiruchengode, and Tirupparankundram, respectively, sources added.
