Eleven more government healthcare institutions in Kozhikode have been declared ‘antibiotic smart’ by the State government as part of its efforts to curb anti-microbial resistance, the condition when microbes no longer respond to anti-microbial drugs such as antibiotics.
This comes days after Kakkodi grama panchayat in the district was included in the list of ‘antibiotic literate’ panchayats in the State.
According to Health department sources, the family health centres at Thiruvambady, Chekkiad, Iringal, Azhiyoor, Meppayyur, Chooloor, Eramangalam, Kodiyathur, Iruvallur, Kulathoor, and Moodadi are ‘antibiotic smart’ now. Inspections and close scrutinies were held at the block, district and State level to check if they meet all the guidelines. A re-examination will be held after two years. The department conceived the concepts of ‘antibiotic smart’ hospitals and ‘antibiotic literate’ panchayats as part of the Kerala Antimicrobial Resistance Strategic Action Plan.
Meanwhile, the Kakkodi family health centre, which was declared ‘antibiotic smart’ in 2024, has been declared ‘antibiotic compliant’ now.
