The four-year undergraduate programme was launched in Kerala’s universities in the 2024-25 academic year. In the same year, 68 courses in 52 colleges in the University of Calicut (CU), the State’s largest university in terms of the number of affiliated institutions, were discontinued. At the same time, some of the colleges launched new-age integrated and honours courses as well, reflecting the churn in the higher academic landscape in the State.

The details of the disaffiliated courses were revealed in a reply given to V.M. Chacko, member of the university’s Senate, at a recent meeting. The number of the disaffiliated courses came down to 60 and the colleges to 45 in the current academic year. These colleges are mainly in Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Thrissur. Some of the most discontinued courses areBVoc (Agriculture), BSc (Mathematics), BSc (Electronics), BSc (Physics), BBA, and M.Sc. (Computer Science). The disaffiliated institutions include both aided and unaided colleges.

However, some colleges sought permission to start new courses such as BBA-LLB, B Com-LLB, BSc (Food Technology), BSc (Psychology), BSc (Geography), BSc (Artificial Intelligence), B Com (Finance), BSW, and B Com (Cooperation).

Mr. Chacko told The Hindu on Saturday (March 14) that most of the students don’t prefer age-old courses without an updated syllabus. They go for new-age courses. He suggested that the university should change the names of the courses and update the syllabus to attract more students. According to Senate members who attended the recent meeting, Vice-Chancellor (V-C) P. Raveendran has promised to set up a committee to look into the issues that led to the disaffiliation of courses and suggest suitable changes.
