Tension prevailed outside the taluk hospital in Sindhanur town in Raichur district on Tuesday for a while when angry family members of a dead woman staged a flash protest with the body in a wheelchair on the Sindhanur-Ballari Main Road.

According to sources, 80-year-old Sangamma Shivanna, who was reportedly suffering from a respiratory issue, was brought to the taluk hospital from Mudgal town for further treatment.

“The patient died on the bed due to delay in care and providing her the immediate and necessary treatment,” the family members said. They asserted that it was medical negligence that resulted in the woman’s death.

Due to the flash protest, traffic movement was disrupted for a while.

After coming to know about the incident, the police rushed to the spot.

The angry family members were seen engaged in a heated argument with the police. However, senior police officers tried to pacify them after discussing the situation with the doctors.

Chief Medical Officer Suresh Gowda, who held discussions with the family members inside the hospital, explained the condition of the patient and denied any medical negligence.

Meanwhile, director of RDCC Bank Pampanagouda Badarli, who rushed to the hospital, pacified the family members. Later, they took the body from the place.

Talking to The Hindu, Dr. Suresh Gowda denied any medical negligence. He said that the patient’s condition was critical on arrival, as she was finding it difficult to breathe. The duty doctors provided treatment with nebulisation. However, the patient died due to cardiac arrest.

He said that she had a long history of medical treatment for her heart-related diseases. He added that the doctors were busy attending to emergency patients in the ICU when the patient was brought to the hospital. However, they attended to the woman and provided her treatment and there was no medical negligence as alleged.
