At least nine bufalloes have died due to Balantidium coli (B.coli) infection, and 15 more have tested positive for B.coli since August 24 at Peddevam village, in Tallapudi mandal, East Godavari district.

Veterinarians investigating suspect food poisoning as the contributing factor to the spread of the infection.

District veterinary officer Dr. T. Srinivasa Rao said on Tuesday: “The dung samples have established that B.coli as the cause of death of the nine bufalloes in Peddavam village. The samples of blood, dung and feed from the infected animals are being investigated.”

Experts from the Sri Venkateswaram Veterinary University Gannavaram campus are also investigating the causes for the B.coli infection outbreak.
