One of the largest gatherings of ex-servicemen in the northeastern region, held in Assam’s Sonitpur district on Sunday (March 8, 2026), focused on helping veterans transition to civilian careers.

Eight government departments and agencies, along with four private sector groups, provided information on employment opportunities and dealership prospects to about 4,000 ex-servicemen, war widows, and their family members from northern Assam’s Biswanath and Sonitpur districts.

The event, organised by the Gajraj Corps at a school in Sonitpur district’s Ghoramari, was among the largest congregations of former soldiers in the region. The participants included veterans who had served in the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles.

“Dedicated employment and resettlement assistance cells were established during the rally, enabling access to around 400 job vacancies across sectors such as security services, administration, logistics and technical roles, helping veterans transition smoothly into civilian careers,” Defence spokesperson Lt. Col Athul Sreedharan said in a statement.

He said that stalls set up by private firms specialised in various products provided guidance on employment opportunities, dealership prospects, agricultural equipment support, and small business initiatives for ex-servicemen.

General Officer Commanding of the Blazing Sword Division and chief guest at the event, Major General H.S. Gill, paid rich tributes to the veterans and Veer Naris (war widows) for their contributions to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and security.

Six war widows and eight distinguished war veterans were felicitated during the ceremony in recognition of their sacrifices and service to the nation.
