In a relief to residents of Kodagu, the Ministry of External Affairs has approved a three-day passport mela in the district from April 8 to April 10, following efforts by Mysuru and Kodagu MP Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar.

The Regional Passport Office Bengaluru will organise the special camp as per directions from the Ministry. Officials have invited the MP to inaugurate the mela on April 8.

The decision comes after Mr. Wadiyar wrote to senior officials of the Ministry in February, highlighting difficulties faced by Kodagu residents — particularly senior citizens — who currently have to travel to Mysuru or Bengaluru to apply for passports.

During a recent visit to New Delhi, the MP also met Ministry Secretary Sripriya Ranganathan and renewed his request for holding a passport camp in Kodagu. Acting on the representation, the Ministry directed the Bengaluru Passport Office to make necessary arrangements.

Mr. Wadiyar has urged eligible citizens of Kodagu to make full use of the opportunity.

Upgrade

Citing the steady rise in passport applications from Mysuru and Kodagu districts, the MP has also appealed to the Ministry to upgrade the existing Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, Mysuru into a full-fledged Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) with tatkal facilities.

He pointed out that Mysuru, one of Karnataka’s fastest-growing cities, has witnessed a surge in outbound travel for higher education, IT employment, tourism, and overseas job opportunities. However, the current POPSK functions with limited capacity and does not offer Tatkal services, forcing applicants to travel to Bengaluru to meet urgent passport requirements.
