Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president Nainar Nagenthran and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president Vijay on Tuesday (March 3, 2026) slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not taking strict action against proliferation of illicit drugs in the State.
Their reaction came against the backdrop of a gruesome incident on Monday (March 2, 2026) at Perumpaththu village in Tirunelveli district, where an armed gang, allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs, killed two persons.
Expressing shock over the incident, Mr. Nagenthran, in a statement, said over the last five years, the proliferation of ganja had not only ruined the lives of youth but also posed a severe threat to the general public. He criticised the DMK government for not taking adequate action to curb the sale of illicit drugs.
Referring to the incident, Mr. Vijay, in a post on X, questioned why Tamil Nadu did not have a permanent Director General of Police (DGP) to head the police force. He alleged the DMK government had failed to prevent the free movement of ganja peddlers. “The DMK government had no concern for the safety of the people of Tamil Nadu and would be unseated from power in the upcoming elections,” he added.
