Kerala Minister for Health and Family Welfare Veena George was discharged from the Kannur Government Medical College Hospital, Pariyaram, on Friday (February 27, 2026) after undergoing treatment for injuries allegedly sustained during a black flag protest by Kerala Students Union activists (KSU) at Kannur railway station recently.

She left Kannur around 4 a.m. in an official vehicle and returned to Thiruvananthapuram, where further treatment will continue.

The Minister’s condition had improved and her blood pressure returned to normal, according to an online medical board review held the previous day. Following the assessment, she sought discharge from the hospital.

The incident has triggered a sharp political confrontation, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] maintains that the episode amounted to a premeditated attempt on the Minister’s life. The KSU and Youth Congress have rejected the charge.

Youth Congress leaders even announced a reward for anyone releasing a footage purportedly showing an attack on the Minister and launched a symbolic campaign pledging to offer a sovereign of gold if the allegation is substantiated.

Police sources said that no visual evidence so far established direct physical assault by KSU activists. The railway police, which registered a case in connection with the incident, have also indicated that available footage does not show any direct attack on the minister.

Meanwhile, a photograph of the Minister taken with nurses at the Government Medical College Hospital has drawn criticism from political opponents. The selfie reportedly clicked inside the ICU has been questioned over protocol and decorum.

Critics alleged that posing for a smiling photograph while being treated for a serious neck injury was inappropriate.
